Haya Ali Genawi is a PhD candidate in English at the University of Liverpool, researching depictions of middle-class women’s denial of food in mid to late Victorian literature. Her research also considers the changing food culture of late-nineteenth century Britain, and how seemingly mundane scenes of consumption in the novel offer significant insights into how social class is constructed.
