How to Study the Victorian Era Today?

24 November @ 4-5pm GMT — Nancy Henry (University of Tennessee)

This talk aims to think through some of the ways that current scholars of Victorian literature and culture are redirecting the discipline. The call to “undiscipline” Victorian Studies in a recent Special Issue of Victorian Studies (Spring 2020) shows the ways in which the field is changing by expanding geographic boundaries. A forthcoming issue of Nineteenth-Century Contexts includes personal essays about writing and teaching in the wake of the pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests. I will use my current project on “Horsepower: Horses in Victorian Literature and Culture” to explore how our approach to studying the Victorian period might engage with a range of contemporary issues.

Nancy Henry is the Nancy Moore Goslee Professor of English at the University of Tennessee. She is the author of Women, Literature and Finance in Victorian Britain: Cultures of Investment (2018), The Life of George Eliot: A Critical Biography (2012), and George Eliot and the British Empire (2001). She is also co-editor of the Journal of Victorian Culture and George Eliot-George Henry Lewes Studies.
