Decoding Dickens: A Festive Challenge from the Dickens Code
Together with Professor Hugo Bowles (University of Foggia), I’m working on a project called the Dickens Code, which seeks solutions to Dickens’s undeciphered shorthand writing. You can find out more about the project via:
- Our website: https://dickenscode.org/
- This BBC Radio 3 Free Thinking programme (the Dickens Code features in the last 15 minutes): https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0011d1v
- This recent University of Leicester Press Release: https://le.ac.uk/news/2021/december/dickens-code
In conjunction with the Dickens Project, we’ve set a £300 decoding challenge that seeks the best full or partial solution to the mysterious Tavistock letter with a deadline of 5 pm (GMT) on 31 December 2021. If you like codes and word puzzles it is well worth giving it a go!
You can download a competition entry form here: https://dickenscode.org/decoding-dickens-prize/
You can find a range of resources to help you decode here: https://dickenscode.org/resources/
Good luck!
