BAVS Newsletter: Notices for Inclusion

The BAVS Newsletter Editor, Amy Waterson, and the Assistant Editor, Ruth-Anne Walbank, invite you to submit notices for inclusion in the upcoming newsletter. These may include CFPs, notices of Victorianist interest, new publications, and more.

Additionally, they are always looking for new reviewers and feature contributors. Below are a few areas they are keen to highlight:

Book Reviews – New Reviewers Wanted

A selection of books in need of reviewers has been featured in previous newsletters. If you are interested in reviewing a book, please get in touch with the editors.

Foundational Texts Series

They are also soliciting reviews that (re)consider the impact of texts which have made a foundational contribution to Victorian studies.

They ask that reviewers revisit a foundational contribution to Victorian studies, published between 1950 and the present. How has it been built on, nuanced, and challenged by subsequent scholarship? Is it still a ‘game-changer’?

Suggestions:

• Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar, The Madwoman in the Attic: The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Imagination (Yale UP, 1979, 1984)
• Gillian Beer, Darwin’s Plots: Evolutionary Narrative in Darwin, George Eliot and Nineteenth-Century Fiction (Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1983; CUP, 2000, 2009)
• Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Between Men: English Literature and Male Homosocial Desire (1985)
• Edward Said, Culture and Imperialism (1993)

Please note that in most instances it will not be possible for us to provide a copy of these books. 

New Feature: Recent Exhibitions/Events

They are keen to feature reviews of new exhibitions, theatre productions, or other cultural events that relate to Victorian studies. Some suggestions of recent events include:

• Jane Eyre, The Northern Ballet Tour (2025)
