UVC’s Statement on AI
Undisciplining the Victorian Classroom (UVC) has published a “Statement on Using Generative AI” (https://undiscipliningvc.org/html/about/statement_on_using_generative_ai.html). This statement offers our reflections on generative artificial intelligence (AI), discusses some of the problems raised by the technology, but also addresses the point that:
“We at UVC also believe that the present moment offers a unique opportunity to engage generative AI in the service of our mission to support innovative pedagogy and take teaching seriously as a critical practice. Through doing so, we hope to model how scholars-at-large might use generative AI technologies thoughtfully in their pedagogy, rather than shy away from them. In fact, we believe that engaging with generative AI directly gives us and our students the opportunity to interrogate these technologies and critically determine the role that they play in our lives and scholarship.”
Please feel free to read our full statement and share your thoughts about the points we’ve raised. We’d love to hear from you!
Call for a Social Media Assistant Editor
Undisciplining the Victorian Classroom is seeking applications for a Social Media Assistant Editor to handle the promotion and dissemination of UVC materials and activities.
Primary responsibilities will be 1) developing social media strategies, activities, and posts (Twitter, Discord, Twitch, etc.), and 2) gathering material for and writing the quarterly UVC newsletter. There will also be an opportunity to explore the use of AI technologies to support this work. We expect a commitment of at least one calendar year. Pending good progress, the position is also renewable for a second year at which time the editor would be invited to become a permanent member of the UVC staff.
For more information, please see the full description on the UVC website (https://undiscipliningvc.org/html/about/call_for_assistant_editors.html).
To apply, please send your CV and a brief statement of your interest in UVC and this position (a few paragraphs; no more than one page) to both Adrian S. Wisnicki (awisnicki@yahoo.com) and Ava Bindas (akbindas@ucdavis.edu). Feel free to highlight any relevant experience as well as interests. We will accept applications on a rolling basis, but priority will be given to those who submit by October 1st.
Join UVC for a “React Event” on Twitch
In light of ongoing defunding and abolishing of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives as well as Humanities-focused departments (see West Virginia University’s cutting of the World Languages Department) and programs/majors (see New College of Florida’s move to end their gender studies major), UVC is hosting a live online fall event to address these volatile and extremist moves in higher ed.
Because this crisis of the University is multipronged, and in accordance with UVC’s mission to undiscipline, we see this as an opportunity to gather in solidarity across institutional and field boundaries. On Thursday October 19th from 2-3pm PDT / 5pm – 6pm EST, UVC will live stream this “React Event” on the social media platform Twitch. Dr. M.A. Miller will be joined by invited guests in higher education who will offer responses to specific incidents around this ongoing crisis.
To sign up and indicate your interest in attending this event, complete this Google Form (https://forms.gle/XenJNjtYJB9rDT8N9).
Have questions? Please feel free to reach out to Rae Yan (raeyan@ufl.edu), M.A. Miller (m.a.miller@wsu.edu), and Cherrie Kwok (mk7kf@virginia.edu).
