Registration for BAVS 2019 Dundee is now open

We’ve managed to keep the costs as low as possible, thanks to the support of various sponsors, not least of all the BAVS executive committee, Dundee’s Centre for Scottish Culture, and the Scottish Centre for Victorian and Neo-Victorian Studies. The Conference Dinner at Chamber East, a lovely nineteenth-century building, is FREE for everyone (sign up required). In fact, all of the evening events are FREE, in the spirit of maximum inclusivity and conviviality. The “early bird” conference fee (£140/£175) ends 1st August (our events have strict capacity limits so we advise you to register at your earliest convenience); after that there will be flat fee of £200. Day rates are available. The full Conference Programme is due to be released in the next couple of weeks.

Registration: bavs2019.eventbrite.co.uk
Conference website (travel, accommodation, local tips): https://www.conventiondundeeandangus.co.uk/conference/167_BAVS2019.html

Please note: you must book your own travel and accommodation for the conference. Discounts are available on our conference website, in association with Dundee & Angus Convention Bureau. There are also national budget hotel chains (Premier Inn and Travelodge) operating in Dundee and the surrounding areas. Hotels.com is also a popular price comparison resource. West Park, the university’s conference centre, has been block-booked for our delegates, and is probably the most suitable accommodation for the conference – it’s reasonably priced, comfortable, and only a short and direct bus ride to the Dalhousie Building. (West Park will come up on the conference website if you select “Attendee-Invoice”.)

REGISTRATION
Your ticket includes (1) conference fee; (2) all food and drink during the day; (3) conference bags; and (4) some wee extras. To qualify for the reduced fee you must register before 1st August. Registration after that date will only be available at the higher rate. The registration desk at the conference will open at 8am on 28th August, ahead of the opening session at 9am. “Pre-registration” the day before will also be available on demand (contact bavs2019@dundee.ac.uk). Email any dietary or accessibility requirements to the same email address well ahead of time.

OPTIONAL EXTRAS
On the registration page, under “Additional Items”, you will see three evening events to add to the cart: (1) Civic Reception (27th August, 6.30pm; FREE). Taking place at City Chambers, this pre-conference civic reception includes drinks and welcome speeches. Spaces are strictly limited. (2) Verdant Works (28th August, 7pm; FREE). Taking place at Scotland’s jute museum, this exclusive reception includes drinks and speeches. (3) Conference Dinner (29th August, 8pm; FREE). This sit-down dinner takes place at Chamber East, behind The McManus Art Gallery and Museum. Ticket includes a three-course meal, teas and coffees. A fully licensed cash bar is also available. Scott Gardiner will be singing nineteenth-century Scottish ballads.

TRAVEL
The city is readily accessible by train from either the West Coast (Glasgow –  c.1.5 hours to Dundee) or East Coast (Edinburgh – roughly 1hr from Dundee) main lines. It is also accessible by bus or train from Edinburgh or Glasgow airports, which are served by most major airlines, and limited flights are available from London Stansted to Dundee Airport (Loganair) around the conference dates. A conference discount of 30% applies to Stansted-Dundee flights from 27th-30th August (see the conference website for details). Buy your train tickets here.
